This study focused on the Jangdan of Hwanghaedo-gut to study about the overall characteristics of Hwanghaedo-gut Jangdan and the principles of operating Jangdan by analyzing the Jangdan based on the data collected by the field research. The above discussion is summarized as follows. The Jangdan of Hwanghaedo-gut is generally divided into the accompaniment of shaman songs and the accompaniment of dances and varies depending on the classifications of Yeonan-gut and Naeryuk-gut and Gyeolrye. Also the Jangdan of Hwanghaedo-gut shows a very complex characteristics because it is related to the importance of Gutgeori and the portion of divinity while it encompasses all the above characteristics being closely related to the function of Gut. When Sangjanggu operates the Jangdan in the performance of Hwanghaedo-gut, he intended to play the optimized Jangdan that help a shaman fall into a trance to communication with gods by applying four principles: ‘slow and fast of the tempo’, ‘heteronym and multi-usages’, ‘connection and combination’, ‘application and changes.’ The characteristics of Jangdan of Hwanghaedo-gut and the principles of operating Jangdan can be the distinguished musical characteristics of Hwanghaedo-gut from other local shaman ritual music. The content of the characteristics of Hwanghaedo-gut Jangdan and the principles of operating Jangdan uncovered in this study have a potential to expand the discussion to the educational application for Gugak. If the discussion on the musical aspects of Hwanghaedo-gut from the educational perspective continues, the educational application of Gut music based on the specificity of local music can be enhanced.
