A Study on the Inter-grade and Inter-school Connectivity and the Teaching Hierarchy for the Jangdan Instruction for Elementary and Middle Schools

Han, Yun-Yi

This study aimed to analyze the connectivity of the jangdan instruction presented in 62 music textbooks of elementary and middle schools and, based on the analysis, set a universal teaching hierarchy of the jangdan instruction contents for elementary and middle schools. To this end, the study classified all the contents related to jangdan in the elementary and middle school music textbooks into types of jangdan, teaching elements, performing techniques, notations, and musical pieces for in-class use and analyzed them by grade cluster. The result of the analysis revealed that there were a continuity corresponding to simple repetition in the instructional contents for all the jangdan types and a sequence of extended repetition between grade clusters. There was also a sequence of intensified repetition in performing techniques, notations, and teaching elements and integrated instruction in teaching elements. This shows that the teaching contents for jangdan presented in the textbooks are well linked throughout the grades in general. However, there are some areas for improvement. First, there is sufficient connectivity between the grade clusters in elementary schools while insufficient connectivity between elementary and middle schools. Thus, considering the contents of elementary school music textbooks is needed when developing middle school textbooks. Second, the gueum notation and signals of some jangdan for the janggu and the drum were not standardized. For better learning effects, the standardization of the gueum notation and signals is needed. Third, there was a risk of confusion due to differences in terminology used in the same concept as in ‘byeonhyeong (변형)’ and ‘daneunhyeong(다는형).’ For a clear understanding, it is necessary to standardize it as ‘daneunhyeong.’ This study focused on improving the unsatisfactory connectivity of the jangdan instruction and selecting the teaching contents of jangdan for elementary and middle schools to secure the linkage between school levels. When setting the teaching hierarchy, it reflected the findings of the analysis to a substantial extent but considered the difficulty of learning contents, the possibility of interlinked learning, and learning effects for the areas in which varied opinions occur among textbooks. It is necessary to establish a comprehensive teaching system of the jangdan instruction by examining the connectivity in learning activities and setting the teaching hierarchy for other jangdan types that were not covered in this study.
