An Analysis of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment for Sijo and Gagok Singing in the 2015 Revised Middle School Music Textbooks

Yu, Sun-Mi

Korean musical pieces for in-class use are a comprehensive artwork that enables interdisciplinary lessons of subjects and each domain presented in the curriculum. In particular, sijo and gagok are great vocal teaching-learning materials because they include the music culture and ideologies of the seonbi society, poetry, and the grammar of the Korean language during the Joseon period. Thus, the teaching-learning contents of sijo and gagok in the textbooks, a reference of the Korean national common education, should faithfully meet the achievement standards of each domain and present various contents that can be educationally applicable. The purpose of this study is to provide instructional materials for teaching, learning, and assessment of sijo and gagok in middle school music textbooks under the national common curriculum. To this end, analyzing 14 types of the 2015 revised middle school music textbooks, the study examined the contents of teaching, learning, and evaluation for sijo and gagok singing activities in the domain of expression and suggested following standards that should be achieved through sijo and gagok learning-teaching. Students should be able to learn musical elements such as the constituent notes, naedeureum form, cadence, musical form, sigimsae, and rhythmic patterns of sijo and gagok at middle school level and sing based on the understanding of these musical basics, and creatively articulate their feelings through physically expressing the length of a beat by using yangsujibak (a Korean beat-counting method with the use of both hands). Students will understand the components of pyeong-sijo and make creative expressions through creative activities of composing a piece of pyeong-sijo and singing pyeong-sijo as a replacement of lines in musical drama making. They will also use basic performing postures and methods such as correct posture, breathing, vocalization, expression of embedded meanings behind the lyrics in singing sijo and gagok. The assessment for this should be made based on evaluation criteria and achievement standards in accordance with instructional stages of teaching-learning contents that are first established. It is believed that this study will become a foundation for setting the hierarchy of Korean music teaching and assessment for each domain through the analysis of Korean music teaching, learning, and evaluation in elementary, middle, and high school music textbooks. Following the setting, further studies on teaching, learning, evaluation plans should continue.
